Nutrition

PROGRAM OVERVIEW The purposes of the Older Americans Act (OAA) Nutrition Program is to reduce hunger, food insecurity and malnutrition, promote socialization of older people, and promote health and well-being of older people by giving access to nutrition and other disease prevention and health promotion services. Ark-Tex Area Agency on Aging can help pay for a meal to an eligible person 60 years of age or older and their caregiver. Meals are either home delivered or served in a congregate setting.
PARTNERS IN SENIOR NUTRITION

The Area Agency on Aging partners with two organizations to run our nutrition programs. Questions about eligibility, home delivered meals, or senior center hours of operation should be directed to these agencies. Eligibility can be determined by these agencies in as little as 10 minutes over the phone.

Area Senior Centers

Social relationships are necessary for the older population to stay connected and active. Regional congregate nutrition sites (“Senior Centers”) provide an opportunity for socializing through games and conversations while receiving hot, nutritious meals (which follow established dietary guidelines).

The congregate meal program assists seniors by providing ways for them to engage in social and healthy activities which contribute to their overall health and well-being, particularly those individuals residing in rural areas.

The Ark-Tex Area Agency on Aging (AAA) is designated by the Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) to provide services to help people age 60 and older, their family members, and caregivers to help them receive the information and assistance they need in locating and accessing community services. Services are targeted to those with greatest economic and social need. Particular attention is paid to people with low-incomes, older people who belong to minority groups, and older people residing in rural areas. In addition, family members and other caregivers may receive information and services on behalf of the older person for whom they are providing care.
