For Andrea Atkins, helping seniors begins with listening. As an Area Agency on Aging (AAA) Case Manager at the Ark-Tex Council of Governments (ATCOG), she spends her days talking with older adults, assessing their needs and connecting them with resources and services to improve their quality of life. Atkins joined ATCOG in July 2020. Her work centers on helping seniors overcome challenges and access the support they need to remain safe and independent.

“What I like most about my job as a Case Manager is helping seniors,” Atkins said. She describes each day as an opportunity to offer support, guidance and encouragement. That connection with seniors is what she enjoys most about her role, particularly when she can help them find the resources they need.

Outside of work, Atkins enjoys visiting Houston with her husband. They make the trip every year to spend time with family and explore the city’s restaurants. Both are food enthusiasts, and trying new restaurants and local favorites is a highlight of their visits.“Houston offers a great mix of family, culture, and incredible dining experiences, which is why it remains one of our favorite places to visit,” she said.

At home, one task falls firmly at the bottom of her list: ironing. “I’d rather do almost any other household task than stand over an ironing board!” Atkins said. Asked what advice she would give her 13-year-old self, Atkins emphasized pursuing the life she wants and building financial habits early. “Never settle for what you don’t truly want in life. Believe in yourself, work hard toward your goals, and don’t be afraid to pursue your dreams,” she said. She would also encourage her younger self to start saving and investing early, recognizing the difference those habits can make in the future.
