Lymon Samis has spent more than a decade growing his career at the Ark-Tex Council of Governments, taking on new responsibilities while continuing to learn every step of the way. He joined ATCOG in June 2014 as a TRAX Driver, navigating rural routes and locating addresses in some of the most remote parts of the region. “I was given one of the most challenging tasks of finding people and addresses in the middle of no man’s country in the woods,” he said.
His experience behind the wheel led to a promotion as Lead Driver before he accepted his current role as Maintenance Supervisor. Today, he oversees the maintenance of ATCOG’s fleet and keeps pace with the changing requirements that come with the job. “Every year there is always new rules and regulations over vehicles that the shop must comply with. Our maintenance team does this very well.”
Although his responsibilities have changed over the years, one thing has remained the same: every day brings something different. Lymon starts his mornings early. “A typical day is waking up at 4 a.m., looking at the ceiling, and deciding what plans I need to accomplish for the day,” he said. “My job is interesting. Every day, month, year, I always learn more about everything ATCOG does.”
Outside of work, Lymon enjoys trying new experiences, especially when it comes to food. He says he does not have a least favorite food because “I’ll try anything once.” One adventure still on his bucket list is visiting the Ice Hotel in Alaska.
Lymon also appreciates straightforward advice. His favorite movie quote comes from Road House: “Just be nice.” He values coworkers who share his sense of humor, keep snacks nearby, speak their minds without a filter, and are always willing to listen.
After more than 12 years with ATCOG, Lymon’s willingness to adapt, learn, and embrace new challenges continues to shape his career and his contributions to the organization.
