Every May, communities across the nation celebrate Older Americans Month (OAM), led by the Administration for Community Living. Established in 1963, Older Americans Month recognizes the contributions of older adults while highlighting the importance of healthy aging and community support.
This year’s theme, “Champion Your Health,” focuses on prevention, wellness, and personal responsibility as important parts of aging well. The campaign encourages older adults to take an active role in their health by staying informed, accessing preventive care, and making choices that support independence and overall well-being.
The Ark-Tex Area Agency on Aging is proud to support this year’s campaign by promoting programs and resources that help older adults across Northeast Texas stay healthy, connected, and engaged.
Healthy aging goes beyond medical care. Staying socially connected, maintaining physical activity, eating nutritious foods, and supporting mental wellness all play a role in improving quality of life. Even small daily habits can make a meaningful difference over time.
Throughout Older Americans Month, individuals are encouraged to take steps to champion their health by:
- Staying up to date on preventive care and screenings
- Building and maintaining social connections
- Participating in regular physical activity
- Choosing nutritious foods
- Practicing habits that support mental and emotional well-being
The Ark-Tex Area Agency on Aging offers a variety of services and programs to support older adults and caregivers, including congregate and home-delivered meals, caregiver respite support, benefits counseling, wellness education, and quarterly Lunch-N-Learn events.
