Governor Greg Abbott proclaimed April 13-19, 2025, as Public Safety Telecommunicators Week in Texas. This designation coincides with the national observance that honors the critical work of 9-1-1 dispatchers and emergency communications specialists.
While police officers, firefighters, and EMS professionals are visible on the frontlines of emergency response, public safety telecommunicators serve as the unseen first responders who initiate the chain of emergency services. As Governor Abbott states in his proclamation, “Public safety telecommunicators are unseen first responders who help save lives every day during emergencies. These dispatchers, 9-1-1 operators, and communication specialists connect Texans with police officers, firefighters, and medical personnel while reassuring distressed callers.”
The Governor’s proclamation further acknowledges that “throughout the Lone Star State, more than 4,000 professionals answer the call for those in need,” and emphasizes that “their expertise and strength in times of crisis ensure that our communities receive assistance when they need it most.”
During this week of recognition, the Ark-Tex Council of Governments extends its deepest appreciation to the 9-1-1 dispatchers serving our region, including those at:
- Atlanta Police Department
- Bi-State Communications
- Cass County Sheriff’s Office
- Delta County Sheriff’s Office
- Franklin County Sheriff’s Office
- Hopkins County Sheriff’s Office
- Lamar County Sheriff’s Office
- LifeNet EMS
- Morris County Sheriff’s Office
- Mt. Pleasant Police Department
- New Boston Police Department
- Paris Police Department
- Red River County Sheriff’s Office
- Sulphur Springs Police Department
- Titus County Sheriff’s Office
These emergency telecommunications professionals are truly the “FIRST first responders” – the initial point of contact in any emergency situation and the vital bridge between the public and emergency responders.
The Ark-Tex Council of Governments encourages all residents to take a moment during Public Safety Telecommunicators Week to recognize the dedication and professionalism of these often-unsung heroes who maintain calm composure during crisis situations and whose skilled communication helps pave the way for the best possible outcomes in emergency situations.
